Chapter Five

The loud beeping sound jolted him awake, and Jeremiah’s eyes popped open. He sat up in the driver’s seat of his car and glanced at his surroundings. The sunrise was putting on an amazing display, and he stretched as much as the confines of his car would allow, and then adjusted the seat from its reclining position.

He turned his attention to the insistent beep of his computer, punching a couple of buttons to stop the alert, and watched as the little blue blip on the screen moved around a schematic of the hospital’s first floor. He looked up out the windshield at the hospital building sitting across the parking lot. His gaze quickly scanned the area. Then he turned back to his computer screen.

It had been a hell of a way to spend the night, but it was the only way he could think of to stay close to her side, short of placing himself inside the hospital and trying to follow her around that way. So when he had made a big deal of kissing her goodbye back at her place, he had used the opportunity to place the tiny tracking and listening device onto her hospital ID badge just before she left. It wasn’t ideal, but it had allowed him to track her movements throughout the hospital and look out for her that way.

He had listened to her triage several patients, and confer with other doctors and nurses all night long. He had even listened to her performing surgery. He loved the way she stayed so calm and level headed during stressful situations. With his background as a SEAL it was a quality he appreciated in a person – one not everybody possessed – and it only made her more endearing to him.

When he’d finally heard her mention going into one of the on-call rooms to get a couple of hours of sleep, he had adjusted the seat of his car and laid back to get a little rest himself. Now he studied the little blue blip on the screen and adjusted the volume on the tiny receiver in his ear. He could hear Monique talking to her resident as they made their rounds and checked on her patients.

He sat listening to her movements for nearly an hour when his work cellphone began to ring. He’d known it wouldn’t take long. He took a deep breath and pulled the phone from his pocket.

“Yes.”

“Dr. Reed is still alive.” The voice was mechanical, and Jeremiah frowned. He wondered why anyone would go to the trouble of disguising their voice from him, but it did make a certain kind of sense. Whoever sent him the package of money knew full well about his rules, and they were trying to get around them. That meant this was obviously someone he had done work for in the past. Someone whose voice he might easily recognize over the phone.

“Yes, she is,” he confirmed as he kept his eyes on the small blue blip on his computer screen.
